CHAILEY CRICKET CLUB (est 1758)

Welcome to our website for all the latest news and events at our friendly family club

THE WINNING HABIT RETURNS - Chailey notched up their second win on a sunny but very windy afternoon. Following on from the previous victory the game at home to Clayton was a run feast. Clayton declared at 216 for 7 (Anirudh Shingal 4 for 72 and 29no) but an opening partnership of 102 between Mark Haylett (32) and Danny Andrews (117) created a firm foundation for Chailey's assault on the target which they met with 6 overs still remaining. A return to form of Andrews (18 x 4; 2 x 6) prompted the comment - 'that's like my old dad' - he destroyed the Clayton bowling with controlled attacking batting. The victory sealed 23 points which has seen Chailey rise the table.
On Sunday - although no win was achieved a couple of good batting performances were seen: Peter Dembrey 56 and Neil Harvey 42 - they shared an 80 run partnership for the seventh wicket before Pete decided he wanted to sit down in the pavilion.
Next league game (5 July - start at 14.00) will be against visitors Preston Nomads 4th XI. No game on Sunday 6 July.

OUR WEBSITE
This site has details of forthcoming fixtures, results, members and general news about the Chailey Cricket Club. This year (2008) the club is celebrating 250 years of cricket in Chailey an achievemnet of which we are very proud (see below). The club is a family-friendly club that enjoys competetive cricket played under the the 'Spirit of Cricket' banner.
Don't just read about us come and play for us. Over the past couple of years we have lost a number of players through relocation and retirement. However, we continue to put out teams on Saturdays and Sundays but our resources are becoming stretched and would dearly love more talented cricketers both young and old, to keep us competetive in both league and friendly games.
If you live in Chailey or live in the area from Crawley to Brighton, Uckfield to Horsham and enjoy the countryside, then enjoy the atmosphere of both the beautiful countryside and cricket with us. Our ground is adjacent to the Chailey Common Nature Reserve and enjoys uninterrupted views along the South Downs from Lewes to beyond Devils Dyke. There is ample room for the childen to play in safety away from traffic and cricket.

LEAGUE / FRIENDLY CRICKET
Saturdays are devoted to league cricket (Stoner Mid-Sussex Cricket League Division 2). Sadly we were relegated last year but our aim is to get back to league 1 which we won in 1999, along with the league cup.
Sundays (virtually a different set of cricket mad players) we have a mix of young and the not so young who enjoy the less stressful but still competetive brand of cricket. So, whether you prefer league cricket, or Sundays or both, please join us and enjoy your cricket as well as the after match social 'refreshments'.
In addition, if you want to become our regular UMPIRE or SCORER for Saturday or Sunday or both days. Free tea and, if necessary, travel as well.
New members, prospective umpire (training can be arranged) or scorer (no matter what age or gender) please contact any of the following captains or vice-captains or any other club official:

COLTS CRICKET - Organiser / Coach
Sadly it has been quite a while since we have had a colts eleven but we are very keen to re-instate it. There ia a large pool of keen youngsters who at present have to go to neighbouring villages for their cricket. We would dearly love for them to enjoy playing for their village.
Although senior members are willing to assist when needed, we would like to have someone with the knowledge and enthusiasm who is willing to run the sector. It is not a paid position but full support will be given by the club. Contact Mike Beard (01444 410309) Mark Haylett (01273 400706) to discuss the possibility

WE ARE HAVING A CELEBRATION
It is possible that cricket was played in Chailey earlier than 1758 because in the parish archive records for Chailey there is an entry that confirms that in 1737 a John Boots of Chailey was killed whilst playing cricket. That tragedy occured in a neighbouring village. There is no substantive evidence available at present to indicate that he and other villagers had played in Chailey prior to the latter date of 1758. The club therefore opted to treat 1758 as the base for our celebrations. Thus, in 2008 we will be celebrating 250 years of cricket being played in the village of Chailey.
PLEA - to enable us to increase our historical records we would like to borrow and copy any old club photographs, fixture cards, scorebooks (we only have scorebooks from 1969) Contact 01444 410309 (Mike Beard)
Thanks to Brenda Izzard - daughter of Albert Buckwell a staunch supporter and player of the club both sides of the Second World War - who has already loaned us some photographs from 1930s / 40s. In addition we have ahd a letter from a former Chailey cricketer who is now aged 91 and lives in the West Country, recalling his days in the 1930s playing for Chailey.

PLAYERS/GAMES ARCHIVE
We have a database of all our matches from May 1969 to date:over 1240 games. Unfortunately, to date we have been unable to locate any scorebooks or sheets relating to pre 1969 games. There are records out there so should any club, or individual, have knowledge of or know the whereabouts of score books (ours or theirs) or other records, for that period, even if it is for just one game, we would like to borrow it/them so that the details can be added to the database.
Anyone who has played for Chailey can have a complete personal history of their achievements (or non-achievements).
